What's different about repair & storm restoration in Englewood & Manasota Key
Englewood and Manasota Key took Ian's surge in September 2022 and Helene's and Milton's in 2024. The findings repeat: plastic edge restraint floated at seawalls and on the Gulf side, joint sand gone, bases salted and undermined at the edges, sand and debris over drains, pavers intact. The restoration is the standard sequence with two county files to keep straight. Non-storm repairs are canal-side settling where a seawall weep hole washed the base, and ant-tunneled joints on unsealed decks.

A worked example
A 1968 Lemon Bay canal home on the Sarasota side whose 780-square-foot travertine deck dropped 2 inches along 35 feet of seawall in Milton. After documentation and three weeks of drying: 300 square feet lifted, base voids rebuilt in lifts, fresh-water flush, concrete curb along the seawall, travertine rinsed and reset with 12 new pieces, polymeric sand, coping resealed. No permit needed on the Sarasota side; site work documented for the insurer. Planning range: $5,000 to $7,800.
Should the deck be rebuilt differently the third time?
Only the edge and the base need to change: a concrete curb where the plastic restraint was, geotextile under the base, and a flush-and-reset plan on the care sheet. The pavers themselves have survived three surges already.
