Planning calculations from the September 10, 2026 ranges. They assume a normal lot, standard access and an existing surface that comes out without surprises.

The maintenance column nobody puts in the quote

Pavers are quoted as an installation and owned as a maintenance cycle. Over twenty years on a coastal lot the cycle is a real number, and it belongs next to the install price when you compare pavers with concrete.

Twenty years of that on a 600-square-foot driveway is roughly $7,000 to $15,000 in today's money, against a concrete driveway that wants a penetrating sealer every few years and nothing else. What you buy for the difference is a surface that can be lifted, reset and repaired unit by unit, which is worth more on a lot that floods than it is on a dry lot east of I-75.

Material cost at the yard versus installed cost

The spread between what a paver costs on a pallet and what it costs finished on your lot is labor, base and cutting, and it is the part most estimates do not break out. Knowing the yard price tells you how much of a quote is material and how much is work.

The pattern to notice: on concrete pavers you are mostly buying labor and base, so the quality of the crew decides the outcome. On marble and porcelain you are mostly buying the material, and the crew's job is to not waste it and to build a base flat enough that a rigid unit does not rock.

Where a paver quote hides the money

Paver estimates are quoted per square foot, which makes them look comparable and often is not. Four lines account for most of the spread between two quotes on the same deck or driveway.

1. Base depth and lifts. Six inches in two lifts against four inches in one is roughly $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot and the whole service life of the driveway. It is never visible in a finished photo.
2. Edge restraint. A poured concrete curb runs $12 to $20 per linear foot; spiked plastic restraint is a fraction of that. On an interior patio edge the plastic is fine. At a street apron or a seawall it is the part that fails first.
3. Cutting. A rectangular patio in running bond has almost no waste. A 45-degree herringbone driveway with a soldier course and a radius at the apron has a day of saw work in it, and the material waste that goes with it.
4. Coping and edge detail. On a pool deck, coping at $25 to $60 per linear foot across 90 feet is $2,250 to $5,400. A quote that prices the field and omits the coping is not a quote for a pool deck.

The useful request when comparing two paver quotes is simple: ask both contractors for the base depth, the number of lifts, the restraint type and whether coping is included. Two of the four are buried under the surface and the other two are at the edges, which is why they are the ones that get quietly dropped.
