Fiber controls the plastic shrinkage cracks that form in the first hours of a hot Sarasota afternoon; steel controls how wide a crack opens after the slab has moved on a soft base. Vehicle slabs get fiber plus #3 rebar on chairs at mid-depth; walks and patios usually get fiber and same-day joints. Wire mesh works only when supported at mid-depth, which on most jobs it isn't.

Cost: fiber adds roughly $0.10 to $0.20 per square foot, #3 rebar on chairs $0.60 to $1.20, mesh in between. Reinforcement doesn't prevent cracks; joints and base do that. Reinforcement keeps the cracks that happen anyway from becoming steps.
